The story of Rosa Parks is well known. Born in Tuskegee, Alabama in 1913, Rosa Parks’ childhood was framed by the severe restrictions on the lives of African-Americans in the southern United States. She attended segregated schools, having to leave High School early to care for her grandmother and mother, both of whom had become ill. Rosa Parks was not able to finish High School until after she was married. She married Raymond Parks in 1932 and they both became involved in the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) and the Montgomery Voters’ League. She was, therefore, involved in civil rights struggle in the USA long before the bus incident for which she is famous. More on this subject...

Find resources that you didn’t know about.
This annotated listing of books about pioneers and heroes from black & minority ethnic groups, is based on the stock currently held at the Ahmed Iqbal Ullah Race Relations Archive in Manchester. Inevitably, these kinds of lists are out-of-date almost as soon as they are produced! But it may help you to find resources that you didn’t know about. Most of the books are still in print, even though they may take some hunting. A few are not in print, but you might find old copies available in Development Education Centres, libraries, etc. A guide to sources is listed at the end of the document, with a particular focus on the North-West.
