Born a slave in 1797, she gained her freedom in 1826 and later became one of the first African-American women in the United States to win a lawsuit against a white man. She travelled across the US preaching on religion and against slavery and advocated rights for women. During the civil war in the US she cared for slaves who had run north to freedom and later became a counsellor to the freed slaves.
