International Women's Day - 100th Anniversary

8th March 2011

International Women's Day is a celebration of women and their achievements. Also, reflecting on the problems women face in the world today. This is the 100th Anniversary of International Women's Day.

Primary Colours has produced a number of Teaching Packs for Primary Schools in our Did You Know Series which include women of great influence and importance. They are:

Claudia Jones: Known as the mother of the Notting Hill Carnival.
Noor Inayat Kahn: Part of WAAF and a Secret Agent during World War II.
Cornelia Sorabji: Britain's First Female Law Student.
Bushra Ahmed: An extraordinary businesswoman in Britain today.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan: Indian Actor and known as the “Queen of Bollywood”.
Malorie Blackman: Author of over 50 books, one of her books became a film and went on to win a BAFTA.
Benazir Bhutto: Former Prime Minister of Pakistan.
Aung San Suu Kyi: Burmese peace activist, prisoner and Nobel Peace Prize winner.
Rosa Parks: Civil rights activist, whose bravery and refusal to give up her seat helped end segregation in the USA.

These women are and remain great role models for young girls in all walks of life. Boys will learn from these Teaching Packs and perhaps appreciate the role women play in their lives. The Teaching Packs also include plenty of male role models for them too. These Teaching Packs can help you embed respect and consideration of women's achievements in your classroom.
